Feeling lost? How to find your way out of the woods

A few members of the Ulster & Northern Dutchess Readiness Group participated in ARRL Field Day during the fourth weekend of June at Taconic-Hereford Multiple Use Area. We were not able to get members of the local media to join us that weekend, but they were excited to learn more the week after and we coordinated a visit with Kara Burnett of Spectrum News.

This location in Pleasant Valley was chosen not only because it is part of the "Parks On The Air" program, but because it is a great off grid location for practicing emergency communications and primitive camping skills.  Many people frequent the park year round, including casual nature enthusiasts, hunters and those with capable bicycles known as "fat bikes". Together, different groups are trying to help promote how valuable this location is via the website called "Save the 909" and are working closely with DEC rangers to ensure everything remains safe for everyone.

On Saturday during the Field Day event, some trail runners came by to learn what we were doing, but also to ask for directions.

We happened to have maps on hand as part of a planned "radio direction finding" event scheduled for Sunday and we were able to help them but also share some critical tips for next time they go into the woods and try not to get lost.

Had they had an amateur radio with them, it may have helped them ask for directions should they have not found other people in the park.
It was nice to meet Kara Burnett in person and provide some helpful advice about what to take with you while out in the woods in addition to critical things like water and other items which the DEC recommends as listed on the trail kiosk.

As UNDR Group continues to expand, we plan to have more in person short gatherings to help others get involved in amateur radio through "Parks On The Air" and "Summits On The Air". There will also be in person monthly meetings being scheduled based on member interest.

Our official results from ARRL Field Day 2023 will be posted later this week along with videos now that we have our official interview with Spectrum News on the map!
